As an advocacy intern at the Sexual Trauma Awareness & Response Center (STAR), I worked directly with survivors of sexual assault, in the hospital and in office. In office, I created and presented multiple reports for the use of the advocacy team in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans office, planned a potential fundraiser for STAR, filmed and edited a four episode prevention web series for STAR's YouTube channel, and answered the 24 hour crisis line. When on call after hours, I continued to answer the crisis line and accompanied victims to the hospital for their medical forensic exam.
Sexual Assault in Military Report |
The sample below explains the current reporting methods and legal process for reporting sexual assault in the military, resources for service members in Louisiana, and future legislation that could affect these procedures.
New Orleans Community Resource GuideAs STAR is a small nonprofit, it cannot provide all needed services to the victims and survivors who come for assistance. For example, some victims need emergency housing because their attacker knows where they live. STAR creates a community resource guide for each city they are located so they can provide them with options for these services.
For the New Orleans guide, I worked with a fellow intern to create key words to assist in searching the document. We then compiled lists from other resources in the New Orleans area. As this is a 99-page document, I have included excerpts on the next pages. Agent of Change BlogI was asked by STAR to create a blog entry for their weekly Agent of Change series. Using their format, I spoke about why I became involved in the anti-sexual violence movement, what motivates me, and how I would encourage others to join.
